DENR welcomes SMART 6.0 Upgrade for Lawin App

To further strengthen efforts in protecting the remaining forest in Central Visayas and enhance the implementation of the Lawin Forest and Biodiversity Protection System, another upgrade of the SMART Software is now being introduced and deployed to around 30 forest protection officers of the Department and Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7.

The Forest Management Bureau (FMB) with the USAID B+WISER Program are now conducting the Lawin SMART 6.0 Upgrade Roll Out to LAWIN designated data managers and resource managers from DENR 7’s provincial and community offices to update them on the latest development of the SMART Software features such as tracking responses to threats, analysis on the engagement of partners through rank filters and SMART Connect Dashboards.

According to DENR 7 Regional Director Gilbert Gonzales, the main intention of the upgrade is to improve LAWIN data management during the conduct of LAWIN patrol activities that will be useful in the development of good policy recommendations for a more effective forest law enforcement operations in the local level.

“This is a very welcome development as we strive to take advantage of the available technology to maximize our efforts especially the enforcement of our forestry and biodiversity laws,” added Gonzales.

The Lawin Forest and Biodiversity Protection System is the modernized system that integrates forest, biodiversity and threats monitoring, implementation of interventions to address threats and monitor the response of the forest ecosystem management interventions.

Adopted as one of the DENR national strategies for forest protection in 2017, the Lawin System uses a smartphone app and open-source software in data collection and analysis that aid DENR decision makers in identifying and implementing adequate responses to threats. The system also continuously monitors the effectiveness of these responses on forest ecosystem improvement.

The two-day capacity building and roll out is conducted on September 13-14, 2018 at Mezzo Hotel, Cebu City.
