The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Central Visayas joined hands with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau and the Environmental Management Bureau Region 7 is celebrating three (3) major environmental events for this month namely:  National Environmental Awareness Month, National Clean Air Month, and the National Climate Change Consciousness Week (November 19-25, 2023) with the theme “Circular Actions for Climate Hope” which aims to take leap action on environmental issues as well as addressing concerns on climate change.

Republic Act #9512 signed in 2008 known as the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008, declared the month of November as National Environmental Awareness Month to promote awareness especially among the youth, on the importance of the protecting the environment and natural resources and the sustainable growth and development of the country. This law also called for the integration of Environmental Education in school curricula at all levels, whether public or private including in barangay daycare, preschool, non-formal, technical vocational, professional level, indigenous learning and out-of school youth courses or programs.

This month is also declared Clean Air Month in the Philippines. The passage of the Philippine Clean Air Act or Republic Act #8749 in 1999 provides for a comprehensive air pollution control policy, as it outlines the government’s measures to reduce air pollution by including environmental protection activities in the development plans.

Proclamation No. 1667 dated November 18, 2008, designates November 19-25 annually as “Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week. It aims to create awareness on global warming and climate change by pursuing broad and intensive public information and education campaigns to secure the collective cooperation of the private and public sector.

Different ENR activities were conducted in the region to celebrate these  three major events: Concert for Clean Air in Robinsons Galleria Cebu.  Students from different schools in Cebu participated in the Pintakalikasan, Balak Para sa Kalikupan and Sangka sa Kaalam sa Kalikupan contest. Part of the program also includes the commitment signing.

Another event was held at the Parklane International Hotel, the 2023rd Solid Waste Management Summit and DENR-7 Central Visayas Regional Executive Director Paquito Melicor Jr. give his message to all the participants, partners, and stakeholders during event. This summit is led by the Regional Director Ma. Victoria V. Abrera of EMB Region 7 focuses on the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility Act (RA #11898).

As RED Paquito D. Melicor Jr. said,  “Let us join hands in protecting Mother Earth. Plant  trees to improve air quality, as trees add oxygen to our air, it can help in the mitigation of air pollution and live a sustainable life- take a walk in going to work of  bike. Use your social media accounts to promote awareness on global warming and climate change. Organize activities aimed in raising awareness and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders. Being aware of the natural environment and resources, and making choices that benefit the earth, rather than hurt it. #ikawakokitaangkaliupan”.
