DENR7 conducts a “Meeting on Wildlife Trading through Courier Services in Central Visayas” on October 05, 2023 at DepEd Ecotech, Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City.

The objective of the said activity is to conserve and protect wildlife species and their habitats to promote ecological balance and enhance biological diversity, regulate the collection and trade of wildlife, pursue with due regard to the national interest, the Philippine commitment to international conversations, protection of wildlife and their habitat and to initiate or support studies on the conservation of biological diversity.

Wildlife trade is big business, with wild plants, animals, and products made from them sold around the globe, legally and illegally. Wildlife trafficking involves the illegal trade, smuggling, poaching, capture, or collection of endangered species, protected wildlife (including animals or plants that are subject to harvest quotas and regulated by permits), derivatives, or products thereof.

Trafficking in wildlife can diminish species populations and cause local or even global extinction. When endangered species are involved, any poaching or harvesting of that species to supply the illegal trade risks the species becoming extinct.

Under RA 9147, violators who will be found guilty of killing critically endangered wildlife will face a sentence of six years and one day to 12 years in prison, or a fine ranging from P100,000 to P1 million. Information, education and public awareness to address wildlife crimes and familiarization of legit wildlife traders was part of the discussion.
