In line with the celebration of the 2022 World Wildlife Day, the DENR Central Visayas together with the City Government of Lapulapu unveiled the Ramsar Site Marker and blessing of the newly completed viewing deck and board walk at the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS) protected area.

Regional Director for Technical Services ARD Charlie Fabre, Cebu PENR Officer Jose Cleo Cary Colis, Cebu City CENR Officer Raul Pasoc, and the City Government of Lapulapu officials lead by Honorable Mayor Junard Ahong Chan and San Vicente Brgy Captain Honorable Cyrus Eyas unveiled the Ramsar Site Marker and Rev. Fr. Edgar Lumarda parish priest of San Vicente lead the blessing ceremony with the key officials.

The OIWS is identified as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA 84), an important Bird Area (PH609) and a Conservation Priority Area (CPA 104). It is the first in the Philippines to be declared under Ramsar Convention as a Wetland of International Importance on November 8, 1994 (Ramsar Site No.656). It provides habitat for significant numbers of migratory waterbirds, where over 10,000 shorebirds have been recorded at one time with total numbers approaching 50,000 (www.ramsar.org
) and on June 22, 2018, Republic Act 11038 was enacted, which included Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS) as a Protected Area within the classification of National Park.

The City Government of Lapulapu Mayor, Honorable Junard "Ahong" Chan graced the event and gave reminders to Olangohanons, he said that the City of Lapulapu is blessed because it is a favorable stopover for tourists both local and international, "We need to intensify the conservation and protection of Olango Island since it became an ecotourism destination in Cebu, palambuon pa gyud nato og maayu ang Olango!" Chan emphasized.

General Roy A. Cimatu visited the Province of Siquijor last February 8, 20222 before he resigned as DENR Secretary due to health reasons.

The former Secretary was welcome by Congressman Jake Vincent Villa, Governor Zaldy S. Villa, Vice Governor Mei Ling Quezon-Brown, PIA-Siquijor, Editor-in-Chief, Rizalie A. Calibo and PNP Convoy Commander PLTCOL Jacinto C. Mandal, Jr.

Discussions on several important issues and concerns that may affect the province’s environment and natural resources, Task Force Build Back Better and the different programs on climate change and disaster preparedness for a more sustainable and resilient Siquijor during the meeting with the different officials in the province.

After the discussion meeting, the Secretary with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-7, Regional Director, Engr. Armando Malicse; Environmental Management Bureau-7, Regional Director, Engr. Maribel Munsayac; Regional Executive Director, DENR-7, Engr. Paquito D. Melicor, Jr., CESO IV; and Assistant Secretary for Field Operations-Visayas, Arleigh Adorable, CESO III meet the officials and personnel of PENRO Siquijor.

PENRO-Siquijor presented the profile and highlights of the accomplishment for the fiscal year 2021. SRAC delivered his message for the employees with much appreciation and admiration to the island province as well as the works and efforts of each and every one.

The program ended with a tribute dance presentation of the “Tayo ang Kalikasan” dance by selected PENRO-Siquijor personnel, followed by the photo opportunity.

 

DENR-7 Celebrates 2022 World Wetlands Day

 

DENR-PENRO Bohol conducted a lecture highlighting the background and importance of river and the World Wetlands Day celebration and River Clean-up (Rivers for Life) in the vicinity of Abatan River with the participation of  the Provincial Government-Bohol Environment and Management Office (BEMO),LGU-Cortes,  Cortes Municipal Police Station, Bohol Provincial Police Office (BPPO), Richli Corporation, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bohol 1st District, Abatan River Community Life Tour, Bohol Water Utilities, Inc. (BWUI), Barangay Local Government Unit  of  Poblacion and P-2 Poblacion, Cortes/Abatan River easement occupants). A total of 156 volunteers (94 male; 62 female) took part in the activity and collected different waste consisting of plastic bottles, facemasks, plastic bottles, diaper, food wrappers and other plastic wastes with a total 1,083 kilograms /71 sacks.

DENR7-PENRO Negros Oriental.     In celebration of World Wetlands Day, Kabalin-an Pond, a permanent inland wetland located inside the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park (BTLNP) in Enrique Villanueva, Sibulan, Negros Oriental                                                                                

PENRO Moreno S. Tagra encouraged guests and visitors to take action towards protecting and conserving the wetlands, being recipients of the multitude benefits derived there from. Conservation and Development Section Chief of CENRO II Dumaguete City also shared the importance of wetlands to the community and the ecosystem to the participants, officials and members of DENR-Kapatiran Negros Oriental and members of the peoples’organization Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Farmers Association, Inc. (BTLFAI). CDS also conducted a rapid inventory of flora and fauna as well as determine the total area of the pond as the office pushes for "nature-based solutions" to conserve wetlands in our respective localities.

 Together with DENR-7 PENRO Cebu, OIWS, and the youth representatives joined the coastal clean-up in Olango Island in celebration of this year World Wetlands Day. The ENR Ambassadors also volunteer during the community feeding program and teaches children about the trash we throw in the sea.

 PENRO Siquijor personnel conducted a coastal clean-up at Simacolong, Lazi, Siquijor lead by Officer-In-Charge, Technical Service Division Vicente Rustico M. Calizar with the participants from the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Simacolong, Lazi, Siquijor. The group collected 105 kilograms of trash during the activity and 44 kilograms are plastics.

DENR officials also meet the local officers of barangays Camp 6 Manipis and Sinsin, Talisay and Camp 7, Minglanilla, Cebu to check and assess the current situation of the trees within the Osmeña Reforestation Project (ORP) after the onslaught of Typhoon Odette. Joining them are DENR 7 Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services, Charlie Fabre; PENR Officer for Cebu, Jose Cleo Cary F. Colis; Cebu City CENR Officer Raul C. Pasoc, and other DENR 7 representatives.
CRERDEC OIC for Research Development Unit, Chona M. Tura leads the CRERDEC team in welcoming visitors, particularly during the site visit at the CRERDEC Camp 7 clonal nursery.

Meanwhile, other DENR 7 technical staff as well join the barangay officials and representatives in the CRERDEC scheduled dialogue to discuss the custody, disposition, and utilization of fallen trees, both timber and other non-timber forest products damaged by typhoon Odette.
